Stratton 12/12-12/14

HEAVEN! That's right! I thought I died and gone to heaven! OK, OK, so I'm exaggerating, but when we arrived to our Stratton penthouse I felt speechless! Getting there was interesting. We had numerous changes and alteration, but finally the weekend crew was finalized. We had Tingy and Peter, Geri, Christie, Eugine and Marina in one van. My car had the polish skiers: Derek, Tomek, Dawid and Beata. Christine Patalano came on her own. At first I thought we won't fit all of us and our gear in my car but leave it up to the polish guys and they can accomplish anything! Trip was almost 5 hours with a break or two and dinner at a Thai restaurant... over all it didn't seem that bad. We left slightly after 4PM and arrived after 9:30PM . When we entered the apartment everyone dropped their jaws to the ground. One - we had our own elevator, two - we had 3 fireplaces and flat screen TV in every room, three - we had a movie theatre room!!!!!!!!! The layout was fantastic and once everyone arrived we polished good 5 bottles of wine and Sarosh and his friends provided some beer. Everyone was in great mood, drinking to Derek's health, afterall he's the one who got us the place and at 3am things fizzled out. In the morning nobody felt like going skiing! We enjoyed our fireplaces and cozy beds. After a quick breakfast I was one of the first people out and it was close if not after 11AM. The temperatures were low and by 4PM I was pretty cold, the lifts were closing and we were getting ready for the happy hour:) We ended up splitting into groups for dinner and then we regrouped back at our place. The energy was different - everyone was recuperating from the last 24hr, not to mention the commute. Some watched TV, some heated up some wine and others played Gestures! Sunday morning came too fast:( Derek asked for a later check out and this time I was one of the last people out! We checked out, skied til 4PM, packed out gear and headed home. On the way we stopped by a cheese factory and I went overboard buying cheddar...
Ride home was even quicker for some reason then the ride to Stratton. Once I got to my place I started to feel chilly...of course...it's holiday season and I'm getting sick once again...I guess health is what I have to ask for this year. Let's hope it turns out to be nothing:)
To summarize things, other then hanging and spending time with friends it was nice to see guys take over the kitchen...I wish I had breakfast in bed, but I guess I'm asking too much. Company as always was great and I'm waiting for our next endeavor.
Post-vacation everyone was bragging about our place and how much everyone wants to go there again...I think it will be hard to stay in a regular hotel once we've been spoiled by the penthouse. I wonder if we'll be able to get it again!

Venice, IT

10-30-2008
Leaving Poland wasn't easy for many reasons, and if it wasn't for the fact that I was leaving for the States from Venice I wouldn't go. It was nice seeing family and friends after 2 year break and it was even nicer to see the bond between us still there and getting stronger in some circumstances. Nevertheless Venice was waiting for me.
I don't like traveling on my own and I think that's why I was nervous. All that dissipated when I arrived at the airport and found the information desk - the staff was fantastic, I found out what I needed and headed out to the city:) The ride on Alilaguna boat took over an hour!!! I should've taken the express line, instead I was stuck on the local blue line. It was dark and I couldn't see the area, but at last there it was! I arrived right at San Marco Square! It was good that I traveled relatively light as I had to log my own suitcase to the hotel. I found it relatively easy - Antica Panada. Right behind the Square! Great spot. Tingy wasn't there yet so I decided to go and explore the area. It was close to 10 PM and with all the lights San Marco Square looked enchanting. I walked around the restaurants and shops and heard someone play tango - I think I have to learn how to dance it, I got jealous looking at others moving to the beat. When I got back to the hotel Tingy was there waiting for me. We decided to go with hotel's recommendation and ate dinner at Ristorante Bar Da Celio. Both the main dish and the dessert were a bit disappointing, I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.
Friday morning I took my time and caught up on my sleep a bit. Then ventured out solo and explored the whole area of San Marco. I took pictures along my path and I couldn't get enough of Venice's beauty. Some might say that the water was dirty, the walls of buildings were not up to par and gloomy but I loved it all. I loved the mask stores and souvenir shops, ostarias and gondolas.I was amazed at the prices thou! They were pretty steep! In the afternoon I caught up with Tingy and we decided to have a quick and LIGHT bite, since later on we were going to take a tour with Oltrex (their office is just around the corner from the square) Venician Food and Wine Tour. We ended up right on Riva degli Schiavoni and picked a place to eat. Looking at the menu our eyes got big and we realized that we were more hungry then we thought. We selected a couple of items from the menu and finally enjoyed the food! What a difference from last night. Their profiteroles in white cream were delish!:) Feeling full we returned to the hotel and got ready for our evening. Turned out that we were the only ones taking the Food tour which was great because we had the guide all to ourselves! He took us to a couple of places which despite feeling full we enjoyed tremendously:) We visited three Bacaro Osteria's which are I would say equivalent to Spanish tapas bars. Food was good and inexpensive and the vino even better:) We marked the places carefully on our map and decided to return to at least two of them. Our favourite was on Salizz. San Canciano,........ The food was good there...or maybe it was because of Rocco...or maybe it was the home made bottles of wine that the manager offered us before our departure. The third bacaro was on 6378 C. Larga G. Gallina (Ostariaalponte.com), just a step from Campo Giovanni - their cheese and ham platter had us singing praises (or maybe it was the wine we consumed so far). After the tour we ended up going to performance of Vivaldi's Four Seasons and afterwards we ended our day.

Saturday was rainy:( We equipped ourselves with umbrellas and headed out. Some areas of the Square were so flooded that we couldn't get thru, seemed like everyone in Venice was out on the "streets" creating traffic everywhere:) Today's goal was to take a ride along the Grand Canal, and we succeeded. We ended up all the way by the bus station and explored most of San Paolo on the way back. For dinner we retraced our steps from the prior day, went back for dessert to our "lunch spot" (but I had to skip - they were OUT of profiteroles!!! Unthinkable!) Then we decided to top the day off with a Bellini at Harry's Bar. That's were the drink was "assembled". I kept on starring at the bartender hoping to steal their recipe without much success:( We returned to our hotel to pack.
Tingly left this morning:( I wasn't looking forward to spending Sunday alone in the most romantic city I've ever seen but decided to make the most of it. I took a stroll in a new area Dorsoduro. I walked along a path on Canale della Guidecca and found a supermarket (Billa) 1492 FMTA zattere Gesuati! We were wondering where the locals got their food and I got the answer. Walking back to the ferry I discovered a nice little wine store with a great selection(992 Cantine del Vino along Rio di San Triovaso)! I didn't want to carry heavy bottles with me and decided to return later, only to find out that they were closed!:( I took a quick nap, finished packing and headed out to the airport around 3:30 Monday morning. As I was walking thru San Marco square I realized that I was the only person there! The sound of my suitcase rolling on the ground echoed everywhere. I looked around, took a deep breath trying to absorb it all and said good bye to Venice.

Polsko...ojczyzno moja!

10-23-2008
"Polsko! Ojczyzno moja!" OK, OK...so it's not exactly how it goes:) but only Polak would know that. Going to visit "home" always brings excitement. This time wasn't different, BUT this time it was going to be "family vacation", meaning me, Gosia and John and my parents trying to spend some time together...in harmony:)
I arrived in Warsaw on Thursday around noon. I felt like a movie star! Blind one - since I didn't recognize my "chauffer", but a star...I was picked up and not allowed to touch my suitcase, taken to my fancy accommodations on Odkryta Street and fed the best food on earth - homogenized cheese!!!!! I almost climaxed by the time I was done eating the first container - Robsik was turning red, wondering probably what was happening to me. I stayed with my "oldest" friend in the whole wide world Brygalka) and her family!!!! We've been friends since 5th grade and I don't think she has changed a bit since then! Except maybe for her haircut:).

In the next few days I -the movie star- was escorted all over the capital so I could visit Ania Ozieblo, Efka, Szubka, Grzesio Kwiecien.

Each time I had to leave my friends I was trying to hide the tears...I was missing them already. On Saturday I was once again escorted around this time destination was Poniatowa. I stopped by Mr and Mrs Bednarczyk for a quick visit. We chatted about what's new and old and then I headed out for another quick stop to see Brygalka's parents and sister. Everyone looked great and I wished I didn't have to rush so much but my family was waiting...and CALLING!
I was overwhelmed when I got to Palikije. On one hand I wanted to make Brygalka and Robsik feel comfortable, on the other I couldn't stop hugging my aunts, cousins and kids! That nightMajka invited us for dinner at PATATAJ. Next two days brought in a feast like only Palikije can bring:) My aunt's cooking and baking is one of a kind.
Hanging out with my family was priceless. Eventhou my grandparent's house and the old big wallnut tree are not there any more part of me will always be in Palikije...My chlidhood was amazing and not a day goes by that I don't appreciate my upbringing.
Sunday we ended up shopping and visiting my dad's mother in Lublin. Earlier in the day I decided to go back to Warsaw and spend sometime with yet another good friend...Of course I got off the bus and once again traveled in style - I could get used to treatment like that, maybe I'll visit more often - Pawel and Zuk picked me right up and swept me off to a Lebanese restaurant Le Cedre. Too bad Brygalka couldn't make it but Robsik and Grzecho made up a little for her absence. Fantastic dinner was followed by a walk down the memory lane at Pawel's place...I was amazed at how many letters of mine he still had ( I couldn't wait to look thru my old box of letters at home, but I KNEW I wouldn't find much;) )!
By now it's Tuesday and it's time for the "family holiday" part of the trip. We stayed at Hotel Mercure just around the corner from Palac Kultury and Zlote Tarasy (shopping mall). I met up with Robert and Magda and we got a bite of sushi. I had a blast watching them eat something they clearly never tasted before and were affraid to touch! My parents arrived with Gosia and John later that night and we took a nice walk thru Krolewskie Przedmiescie to Old Town Square, where we had probably the worst polish food ever! The restaurant was called Baziliszek and the ambiance was very nice, but the chef probably never finished his or hers culinary degree...I don't think I ever saw Jonh leave food on a plate. This time he did and it wasn't because he was too full to finish, it was almost uneatable . It didn't take us very long to realize that we really can't travel together...by the next morning we were being paid off by my mother to go our own way:) We were annoying her and since everyone had their own agenda it was probably better off that we did go our own way. I really wanted to see more of the city but somehow shopping with Brygalka was more appealing:) Later, I got in touch with Agatka Domanska and we all regrouped for dinner. St. Antonio - Italian. Place was recommended by Pawel and everyone seem to have a good time, I know I did...and I think Pan Rafal too;). Three hour play "Swietoszek" by Molier came next. Followed by couple of drinks at Antrakt with Dariusz. I felt bad watching Johnny squirm with pain as he sat thru the play, but I was nicely surprised...it wasn't bad!
Thursday came and it was time for the movie starto depart. I was once again picked up by Robsik and Brygalka. I don't know what I would've done without the cell phone they gave me. I really had the royal treatment! One thing I couldn't understand thou was why Pawel wasn't packing for Venice? Siwce and I spend some more time at the airport and it was time for me to head for the gate...I said my goodbyes and with teary eyes the movie star has stepped off the red carpet and with hesitation walked into a 747.

Via Ferrate and Water Rafting in West Virginia

Ahhhhh
....There's nothing better then hanging on a wire off a steep wall, having your breath taken away by amazing views and bright colors of American fall. Yep...definitely nothing better...well, maybe if you add a chilly night in a tent followed by thrilling water rafting trip. Yes, that's it...there's absolutely nothing better...weeeeelllllllllllllllllllllllll...OK so there's nothing better then beautiful foliage staring at you as you hang above a valley, followed by an even higher increase in your blood pressure as you hit class V rafts on a foaming river SURROUNDED BY fantastic crowd! Yes...now that's it!:) There's nothing better then that...
It took us over 8 hours to get to the cabin were we had to spend our first night...it's a good thing we were tired as those bunk beds looked more like coffins then beds. Rested and excited we headed out to Nelson Rocks Preserve were we had our Via Ferrata adventure! As you see in the pics the views were great (they were amazing and breathtaking but the pictures don't give that off, you just have to see it with your own eyes). I won't be talking much as really there are no words I can write that can describe our thrill. I tell you this...my legs were trembling more then once and my bladder felt very weak a couple of times as well, there was a moment or two that I thought I can't possibly finish the path (going down was a bit scary), but I did!!!!! All of that for under 50 bucks...This spot is begging to be in a Master Card commercial!!!! We arrived safe and sound at the finish and once again got in the car. A few hours later we hit the "cafeteria" at the Songer Base Camp. It was dark and chilly when we started to set up the camp. I warmed up by the fire for a little while but gave up quickly as my eye lids were getting heavier and heavier. I crossed my fingers (hoping that the for casted frost will never arrive and that my sleeping bag which I can't stand will keep me warm) and said goodnight to the gang.
Waking up in the morning wasn't fun. It was FREEZING!!!!! The tent was covered by frost and was so stiff that we barely could fold it so it would fit in it's carrying bag!!!!! I had no gloves and my fingers were blue..."and I"m supposed to take off my cozy jacket, put on lousy 5mm neoprene wet suit and rubber shoes and go in a water!!!!!????? NO WAY!!!!" I could see myself reaching 110 degree fever AND I was flying to Poland in three days!!!!! I chickened out...slowly but surely other girls started to drop out like flies! We arrived at the Songer (rafting company) and I was amazed at how many people were there!!!!!! Bus fulls!!! "Hello!!!!! Isn't anyone worried that instead of rafting on a river we'll be sliding down a icy path????" Apparently not! I strolled around the store and watched others fill their forms...I was furious at myself...Can I really stay behind? All these people are getting ready and I'M supposed to stay here??? UGGHHHHH!!!!! "Fine! I'll do it!!!!!" I had no water shoes and they weren't renting any:( so I put on plastic bags over my feet and pulled socks over it - don't ask me why...I"m blond...so I did! I wasn't looking forward to the trip and others shared my enthusiasm, but there was no turning back. When we got to the river I couldn't even see it thru the fog that was lingering above it! I looked weird and cool at the same time. Some one said it's because the water is warmer then the air, but I found it hard to believe...It was true! When the water hit me the first time I thought I'd stream, instead I gave off another ambiguous noise - it actually felt good to be splashed!!!!! Only for a moment because once the water dripped off the cold returned. I found myself dipping my hands in every once in a while to warm them up!:) The mist was thick and it was hard to see where we were going, but later on in the day the sun came out, temperatures evened out and the mist went away. It was still cold but not like the morning. I was ecstatic that I didn't chicken out of this adventure. The flip at the end of trip was refreshing but I was shivering once we were on land. Will I have to go bankrupt on Sudaphed? Only time will show:) When we got home I overdosed on vitamin C, curled under the covers and waited for the chills to stop:)...they did...and I was fine...I'm such a drama queen!!!! :) It was all worth it! Thanks Gang!

Summer's camping.

This summer was great! Maybe I didn't go away as much as I did at the end of the year but I was able to go hiking and camping a bit more then last year! Once the camping season started I camped with different groups of friends up north in the Gunks. The ride from my place is not too long and on average it takes about 2 hours with rest stops, gas stops and so on. This year we set our tents only at Rondout Valley Campground - it's very family oriented and quite busy, almost too busy for my taste, but because of that it has quite a few amenities that are perfect for "beginners". They have laundry room, TV room, game room, swimming pool, playgrounds, volleyball courts etc. , not to mention that their bathrooms are pretty comfortable. Since most of the campers were new to the idea I wanted to make sure that at least their showers are decent so they will want to come back. I think that worked:) Brenda, Jeremy, Carmen are only a few of the group that gave it thumbs up. Sitting by the fireplace, sipping cider and smoking cigars is just part of what we do out there:)...during the day I always hope for a nice weather so we can hike and explore, they have a TON of delicious blueberry bushes along the hikes so you don't even need to bring lunch:). Couple of year's ago when I was in the area I took the Bonticou Trail and found the coolest rock scramble!!!! Not too easy, not impossible either but can be intimidating at times, and definitely not for everyone. So this year I wanted to visit it more often. One day I found a professional guide and had a chat with him. He told me about rock climbing and cave exploring that can be done in the area, so I organized one last camping trip and booked a guide with EMS, outdoor company from the area. The adventure included rappelling from top of the rock scramble (I was told it was about 180 feet, but didn't seem that high) and second part included cave exploration. Now, this was not a typical cave, in fact I don't think it is a cave by any kind of definition...it simply is a tight passage formed by rocks that were scrambled and didn't collapse completely. Pitch black and wet...slippery and tight...that's what it was! One area named by us "birth" canal, felt like exactly that...at least that's what I would imagine going thru birth canal would feel like:) If you are claustrophobic this is not for you! I was amazed that we were able to complete this obsticle course! It is impossible to get thru it yourself, you definitively need a guide. Don't be surprised if you end up covered in bruises, sweat and mud at the end of it all:) but to be honest it was well worth it and the price was excellent! Bring some Tylenol for soreness the next day:) More pictures are on the side:) Enjoy!
